SNEAKER RECYCLING PROGRAM
Keep Islip Clean will once again participate in NIKE's "Reuse-A-Shoe" program by collecting old sneakers for recycling throughout the month of January. NIKE recycles the sneakers into various materials that are then used to produce athletic surfaces for donation to underserved communities.
In 2007 alone, over 1,300 pairs of sneakers weighing nearly one ton passed through the KIC office for shipment to NIKE headquarters in Oregon. This unique project keeps a significant number of sneakers out of Islip Township's waste stream while also promoting physical fitness through the installation of surfaces like running tracks and basketball courts.
Strong community participation, the hard work of the KIC Junior Commissioners, and the support of the Long Island Ducks and the Islip Recycling Department help make this program a resounding success each year.
This is an extremely popular project for student groups. Please contact the KIC office for more information on how you can be part of this very worthwhile program.
